ABSTRACT

The World Summit on Sustainable Development took place in Johannesburg in 2002, ten years after the Earth Summit. It reaffirmed the will of states to commit to sustainable development. Its main outcome was the promotion of public-private partnerships. It was expected that these agreements would help achieving the sustainable development agenda, illustrated by the Millennium Development Goals. These partnerships imply an evolution of global environmental governance marked by an increased importance given to non-state actors in the environmental and development sectors.
