ABSTRACT
The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development marked the 20th anniversary of the first United Nations conference on the environment in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1972. After a two-year preparatory process, over 170 member states gathered in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in June 1992 and adopted Agenda 21, the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development and the Statement on Forest Principles. Two legally binding treaties, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Convention on Biological Diversity were also opened for signature in the conference.
