ABSTRACT

Human rights are shared norms anchored in international law and legal frameworks, which strongly overlap with some of the goals stipulated in the United Nations (UN) 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. There is evidence, however, that policy projects implemented by development banks, governments and private actors – intended to foster the Sustainable Development Goals – can also conflict with or even violate substantial and procedural human rights. Therefore, human rights should be better integrated into the 2030 Agenda, by making use of the established UN human rights monitoring mechanisms and bodies, by using human rights impact assessments and by demanding compliance with procedural and substantive rights when implementing projects under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
