ABSTRACT

This chapter serves as an introduction to the edited volume, highlighting the importance of intersectionality as an essential framework for understanding urban space, inequality, and violence. It outlines key themes and debates surrounding the emergence of the concept of intersectionality and its relationship to space and demonstrates how the volume synthesizes different perspectives and methodologies, as inspired by the 2022 conference “My City is a Battleground” from which this volume emerges. In particular, the introduction explores the interplay between spatial dynamics and social inequalities, provides an overview of the idea of intersectionality, and briefly introduces refiguration theory. In doing so, this chapter equips the reader to delve into the case studies that follow.
