ABSTRACT
This chapter explores using arts-based pedagogy (ABP) to promote joy and self-discovery in university-level classrooms. ABP can be a method for universal design for learning (UDL), allowing students to express new learning emotionally and reflectively. ABP facilitates deep thinking, collaboration, and empowerment by creating opportunities for both students and instructors to connect and share about their lived experiences. This emphasis on reflection and interaction results in a relationship-rich and culturally responsive teaching approach that values the learner’s experiences and background. Within this chapter, case study exemplars will be shared along with recommendations for the ABP across learning environments for both students and teacher-scholars.
