Stigma and Exclusion in French Urban Peripheries

The urban periphery of Paris has become stigmatized as a dangerous, undesirable area largely because it has become the home of many immigrants from former colonies and the global periphery. The chapter discusses the case of the French banlieues as an example of the processes of exclusion of newcomers of color in Europe, and how the banlieue differs from ideas about historical and contemporary “ghettos.”
