ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the implementation of the Networked Improvement Community for Equitable Literacy (NICEL), a research-practice partnership (RPP) focused on fostering equitable relationships with historically marginalized students and families within a diverse urban school district. Drawing on experiences from a multi-year collaboration among university researchers, district administrators, and an education nonprofit, we discuss how NICEL operationalizes an equity-focused model that emphasizes authentic engagement in the school improvement process. We examine specific strategies and challenges faced by participating schools in meaningfully involving students and families in decision-making while addressing racial inequities in educational opportunities. This chapter highlights the necessity for deliberate effort and time to cultivate equitable relationships, offering insights into how other RPPs can adapt these practices to promote inclusive engagement tailored to their unique contexts and community needs. Key questions for further exploration of equitable student and family involvement in RPPs are also presented.
