ABSTRACT

Involving people in debates about new transport technologies is challenging. Logistics drones lack salience for most people and their portrayal in trials supporting medical use cases and remote communities is uncontroversial. There remains considerable uncertainty about use case scenarios, and more widespread deployment of logistics drones in lower airspace could have significant implications for people. This chapter explores a group of approaches used to involve people with logistics drones. Three tools were used: a board game, a digital game and virtual reality that were immersive place-based experiences. A pre-bunking video was also developed to tackle preconceptions. The chapter sets out how these tools were used, the question strategies deployed, and how they reached diverse groups who would not normally take part in transport consultations. We discuss how the approaches worked and draw conclusions for further social science research on future flight.
