ABSTRACT

Within the extant Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) literature, there is a notable reliance on “grey” literature: scoping pieces, white papers, and market studies, often conducted by consultancies on behalf of key industry leaders or by AAM manufacturers and stakeholders. Grey literature pieces frequently obscure more than they illuminate. Perhaps their greatest utility lies in what they can tell us about the concerns and preoccupations of those stakeholders promoting and producing them. This chapter focuses on bringing out some of the main topical themes and framing ideas from the grey literature and discussing their claims in conjunction with critical perspectives from academic scholarship and wider interested literatures and media. Foundational preoccupations regarding economic feasibility and public perceptions are demonstrated via claims made about sustainability, affordability, autonomy, and connectivity, framed by frequently erroneous assumptions about how publics perceive and respond to information on technical advancements.
