ABSTRACT
The scholarship on Transport-Related Social Exclusion (TRSE) offers valuable insights into the inequitable distribution of mobility within societies, and the resultant harms this inflicts on often already marginalised communities. However, this research often adopts a retrospective approach, analysing existing transport systems and their social consequences. This literature review argues for a proactive approach, emphasising the importance of integrating voices from potentially excluded communities upstream in the innovation and development process of future transportation technologies. As Karen Lucas (2019) highlights, “the question of how transport innovations will affect the future equity of mobility” is crucial. The development of Advanced Air Mobility technologies, which includes new classes of aviation technologies (drones, eVTOLs, and electric or hydrogen powered CTOLs), presents a unique opportunity to leverage existing TRSE research. By embedding social inclusion considerations into the design and development phases of these technologies, we can influence key decision-makers in enabling a more equitable and accessible future of mobility throughout the UK.
