ABSTRACT

April 2023 marked the 60th anniversary of the publication of the encyclical “Pacem in Terris” by St. John XXIII, which remains a seminal teaching document of the Church dedicated to peace. This chapter explores how the principles articulated in “Pacem in Terris” serve as axiological foundations for education for peace (EFP). The encyclical emphasizes the establishment of moral order through principles such as truth, justice, love, and freedom, offering a robust framework for sustainable peace efforts. The chapter examines the relevance of these principles in addressing contemporary challenges that threaten peace, including disparities in global living standards, environmental degradation, and geopolitical tensions. It argues that religious leaders, particularly the Church, have a crucial role to play in EFP, aligning moral teachings with actionable steps in politics and business to tackle the root causes of conflicts.
