ABSTRACT
Sagunt's cultural heritage reflects its historical significance as a Mediterranean crossroads from prehistoric times to the modern industrial era. A strong civic engagement has emerged, with many local associations and the City Council advocating for heritage preservation and pushing for UNESCO World Heritage status. The University of Valencia has collaborated with these groups, fostering social innovation by integrating academic research, local expertise, and participatory governance to enhance cultural heritage management. Sagunt is seen as a “meta-site” due to its layers of Iberian, Roman, medieval, and industrial history. Local associations and citizenship play a crucial role in promoting heritage awareness and organising events like historical reenactments. Initiatives like the Domus Baebia classical workshops and the annual theatre festival further engage citizens and highlight Sagunt's Roman roots. The University of Valencia has established participatory platforms and educational programmes that emphasise cultural heritage's role in social cohesion and economic development. The institution's involvement has revitalised local identity and fostered a collaborative heritage management model aimed at sustainable cultural tourism and territorial branding.
