ABSTRACT
Supporting underrepresented students throughout their educational journey has become a key priority for universities, with efforts focused on both pre-entry outreach and post-enrolment retention strategies. This chapter explores common approaches to outreach targeted at older school students, particularly those in post-16 education, as well as interventions designed to enhance student retention and success in higher education (HE). Outreach initiatives aim to raise aspirations, improve attainment, and increase enrolment rates among underrepresented groups. Beyond access, universities implement a range of support mechanisms to improve student retention and academic progression. The transition into HE presents significant challenges, particularly for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, who may face cultural, social, or academic barriers to success. This chapter examines these approaches, highlighting their role in fostering student confidence, academic achievement, and persistence in HE.
