ABSTRACT
As awareness of the negative impact of humans on the natural world has grown, the international community has undertaken joint initiatives to improve environmental sustainability and, consequently, the health of the entire planet. This chapter explores the environmental challenges posed by autonomous vessels as well as their potential contribution to the international environmental agenda, especially efforts to mitigate climate change and global warming. The International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) strategies to decarbonize the shipping industry are analysed together with the potential impact of autonomous ships on the natural environment. In conclusion, the author underscores that the adoption of environmental regulations for autonomous vessels must be based on a validated technical evaluation and feasibility analysis.
