ABSTRACT

The conclusion of this book highlights the critical need for adaptive and holistic strategies in preventing and managing conflict and violent extremism (VE) in complex systems. In this context, a security-led approach is deemed insufficient, potentially exacerbating the problem by neglecting underlying social, political, and economic drivers of conflict. Instead, a resilience and adaptive peacebuilding-informed approach will acknowledge the context's complexity, focus on addressing the root causes of the problem, and prioritize both local agency and multi-stakeholder collaboration. Key takeaways of this research emphasize that: 1) Adaptive and context-specific approaches are crucial for addressing the complex challenges posed by armed conflict and VE amidst increasing volatility and unpredictability; 2) Community engagement and empowerment in prevention efforts are essential for strengthening resilience and social cohesion; 3) A holistic and integrated approach at the grassroots level will focus on understanding local socio-economic contexts and promoting economic development, social cohesion, and self-sustaining peace by investing in diverse sectors and fostering collaborative efforts between community members; 4) VE occurs in contexts that require holistic solutions, including incorporating environmental peacebuilding strategies, addressing historical grievances and social injustices, and recognizing the gender dimensions of these challenges.
