ABSTRACT

This final chapter summarises the key messages in the book, reflecting back on the research process it describes but also reflecting critically on the broader role of academic books and co-writing. First, it summarises the innovative hybrid participatory audio-visual methodology, considering its potential in facilitating co-researchers to use innovative methods, develop new knowledge together, and direct and shape research and its outcomes. This chapter also summarises the challenges entailed in using it, relating to methods, technology, ethics and power, highlighting the importance of maximising participation and being aware of the coloniality of remote research encounters and how to challenge it. We then reflect on the role and purpose of academic books and return to critical questions around the co-writing process, the nature of knowledge and the value for different team members that is enabled. Finally, this chapter looks to the future and suggests when, where, and why the methodology described in this book might be adapted elsewhere.
