ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the evolution of artificial intelligence (AI)-generated art over the past decade, charting its trajectory from early generative adversarial networks (GANs) to the diffusion models powering today's high-fidelity text-to-image systems, focusing on its transformative milestones and the accompanying shifts in artistic practice. By examining the gains and losses associated with these advances, we analyse the shifting dynamics between artistic identity, creativity, and technological mediation. The chapter addresses key questions: How has AI reshaped the act of creation? What do these tools offer, and what do they take away? The chapter considers the broader implications of these changes for the future of art and creativity. Drawing upon historical context, artist surveys, and recent developments in AI art tools, this work interrogates the implications of these technologies for artists and the broader creative landscape.
