ABSTRACT

This introductory chapter sets the scene by examining the evolving landscape of civic resistance and civil activism in response to crises, wars, and shifts in politics, society, and the environment. It provides key definitions and conceptual frameworks that underpin this book, establishing the context for the diverse range of movements and actions explored. This chapter highlights how individuals and communities mobilise across local, national, and global levels, using both digital and physical spaces to challenge injustice and inspire change. It introduces key themes, including community-led initiatives, volunteer-driven and minority activism, youth engagement, struggles over heritage and housing, and responses to structural inequality. It also acknowledges the creative and unconventional tactics adopted by groups. A central focus is the strategic use of storytelling, offline campaigns and actions, memes, hashtags, and viral content as tools for communication and mobilisation. This chapter outlines how these themes unfold across the book’s chapters, each addressing specific forms and contexts of activism. Drawing on both theory and real-world insights, this chapter provides a roadmap for understanding the tools, tactics, and voices that shape contemporary civic resistance.
