ABSTRACT
Economics has been the offspring of moral science since the days when Professor Adam Smith taught moral science in Glasgow, Scotland. However, over the years, various economists’ attempts robbed economics of its moral content. This chapter reviews the events and the economists who systematically hatched this plot and emasculated the discipline of morality. However, this is now being realised, and attempts are being made to re-establish moral capital as a basic ingredient of any economic system. Moral capital is an essential ingredient for the progress of a nation and economy. In the African context, the role of moral capital is invaluable in generating economic growth and justice.
