ABSTRACT
This chapter outlines the inspiration behind this book and the previous texts that it builds upon. It describes the current context, particularly as we move to super aged communities and why, amid changing demographics and social challenges it is timely. The chapter provides some of the background to compassionate cities and public health palliative and end of life care and the aspiration to normalise in the design of civic life key elements that improve the experiences of death, dying, loss and caregiving for all people. It goes on to provide an overview of the structure of the book and the appreciation of all the authors who have contributed to make this publication happen.
