ABSTRACT
Birmingham is a large, diverse city in the centre of England and became the first city to be endorsed as a compassionate city by Compassionate Communities UK in 2021. This chapter describes the complexity of navigating the different levels of action in developing a compassionate city (i) grassroots, (ii) organisations and services and (iii) city government and policy.
This is a story of learning by experience as the team involved in Compassionate Birmingham worked together to understand the structure, the approach and issues relating to monitoring and outcomes.
The learning is an ongoing process with new opportunities taking shape as this chapter is written. The Compassionate Birmingham Network acknowledges and thanks everyone who has been part of this journey so far.
