ABSTRACT

The Palliative Care Association of Uganda (PCAU) have embraced a compassionate community model within the context of Ugandan’s cultural community norms around death, dying and loss. PCAU partner with healthcare professionals in different areas to initiate compassionate communities and involve local communities including schools. They recruit and rely on Village Health Team volunteers, who are trained in a community-centred, public health-supported palliative care method. They have found the involvement of school students and the experience they have gained valuable. It is hoped they will take with them into the adult life and be the bridge from one generation to another, enabling compassionate communities to be a cultural norm.
