ABSTRACT
This chapter outlines a community-based approach to building death literacy grounded in research and practice and designed to support public health, palliative care, and compassionate communities’ initiatives. It draws on the Death Literacy Index (DLI) as well as practical resources and methods for delivering community education. The DLI has been used to identify existing strengths, highlight gaps in knowledge and skills, and evaluate the impact of programs over time. This chapter introduces the SEAK model (Skills, Experience, Action, Knowledge) as an accessible and engaging way to bring death literacy concepts to life in community settings. Drawing on practice-based experience, this chapter provides a guide to engaging people in death literacy conversations, learn from their community and taking action. The DLI can be used both as an evaluation tool and as a way to strengthen community capacity by re-socialising conversations about death, dying, and grief.
