ABSTRACT

The Death Literacy Index (DLI) can be used in a variety of ways as a survey and using more creative conversational approaches as outlined in Chapter 23. This chapter outlines the use of the DLI in practice firstly as part of Compassionate Birmingham one of the United Kingdom’s largest and most diverse cities. This is followed using the DLI in Brereton, a village in Staffordshire and then as part of a Compassionate Organisations approach and finally by Dorothy House Hospice as part of their work to understand their community. The chapter outlines some of the benefits, challenges and outcomes from using the DLI alongside other compassionate community and public health palliative care approaches.
