ABSTRACT

Compassionate Brereton and Ravenhill (known locally as Brereton) tells the story of a village in Staffordshire, England. The journey to becoming a compassionate community does not start with a focus on palliative and end-of-life care, although, of course, naturally residents were supported with these issues. The need to respond to the community amid the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a support network that was built on existing community strength. The flexibility and adaptation of Brereton Million, now called Vysions, has been key, as has responding to the changing needs within the community and building knowledge, skills and capacity to focus on the best solutions for residents. This chapter is a story about local people, not systems and services.
