ABSTRACT

The aim of the chapter is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on municipal self-government in Hungary. In the first part of the chapter, the characteristics of the Hungarian local self-government system are briefly outlined, and a brief overview of the municipal self-governments is provided. The author examines the preventive and protective measures undertaken by Hungarian authorities during the Covid-19 pandemic. Then, challenges and opportunities faced by Hungarian urban authorities are discussed. Finally, the study focuses on the post-Covid-19 recovery with a special emphasis on the adopted and implemented Hungary's Recovery and Resilience Plan. The final part of the chapter presents the conclusions and recommendations regarding the ‘fight’ against the negative effects of the Covid-19 pandemic at the urban level.
