ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the complex relationship between embodiment and linguistic relativity, challenging the idea that their connection can be captured by a single, overarching principle. While grounded cognition and linguistic influence are often linked, this link varies significantly depending on how embodiment is conceptualized and how language is understood to exert causal influence. Rather than endorsing a simplistic formulation—such as the claim that grounded cognition necessarily entails linguistic relativity—this chapter argues for a more nuanced approach. It suggests that interdependence offers a promising model, though it leaves open the possibility that the nature of the relationship may differ across cognitive domains. Ultimately, this chapter highlights the importance of investigating the multifaceted and domain-specific interactions between language, embodiment, and cognition to better understand the shaping of human thought.
