ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the global film industry in 2024, with a particular focus on developments in the German cinema landscape. Following the recovery of the international film and cinema market after the COVID-19 pandemic, the chapter examines key trends in cinema attendance, box office performance and film genres, highlighting Germany's role as both a production hub and a location for international filmmaking. It offers an in-depth analysis of German film production, funding mechanisms and institutional support, including insights from the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) City of Film Potsdam and the Film University Babelsberg. The chapter also explores the economic impact of international co-productions, using Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin (2022) as a case study, and evaluates the challenges faced by the industry, including rising production costs, gender inequality and the implementation of sustainability standards. The role of major studios such as Studio Babelsberg, international collaborations and government incentives is discussed, demonstrating Germany's strategic position within the European and global film markets. The chapter concludes with a forward-looking perspective on the industry, emphasising the importance of film funding reform, sustainable practices and gender equality to maintain Germany's competitiveness and cultural influence in global cinema.
