ABSTRACT
The Mahila Kisan Sashaktikaran Pariyojana (MKSP) is a sub-component of the National Rural Livelihoods Mission. The programme was launched in 2011 to empower women farmers and address socio-economic and ecological challenges in agriculture. It emphasises enhancing women’s control over production resources, integrating sustainable agricultural practices, and creating member-owned institutions for value addition and market linkages.
MKSP interventions cover diverse livelihoods, including agriculture, livestock, and non-timber forest produce (NTFP). It focuses on sustainable agro-ecological practices, reducing production costs, and improving household income and food security. It has adopted a community-centred approach with a three-tier institutional framework of Self-Help Groups, Village Organisations, and Cluster-Level Federations.
The programme facilitates the convergence of government schemes and partnerships with civil society organisations to provide technical expertise and resources. Its outcomes align with key sustainable development goals by reducing poverty, improving food security, and promoting gender equality. Its success is reflected in increased incomes, better asset quality, enhanced skills, and greater participation of women in decision-making.
An independent evaluation highlights significant positive impacts, including improved dietary diversity, higher income from agriculture and NTFP, and strengthened community resource networks.
The MKSP serves as a model for inclusive and sustainable agricultural development, as it demonstrates the effectiveness of collaboration in addressing challenges in rural livelihoods and women’s empowerment.
