ABSTRACT

This chapter reflects upon the contemporary significance of Japonisme in two ways. The first involves a discussion of what was disseminated under the name of Japonisme as part of Japonismes 2018/Japonisumu 2018, a large festival celebrating Japanese culture in France that was organized by the Japanese government, and points out the contrasting definitions and interpretations of Japonisme by the French and Japanese. The second examines the transnational movement of wearing kimono and wasō that has emerged in the twenty-first century. This chapter will show the effectiveness of the research methods and conceptual framework developed in Japonisme studies in the analysis of a contemporary cultural phenomenon—in this case, the global culture of wearing kimono outside Japan.
