ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces some key concepts forming the theoretical framework for this book. It discusses increasing trends of polarisation and isolation across society, discussing the importance and value of being able to fruitfully engage with different viewpoints and perspectives. In work and research, interdisciplinary approaches are core to this. Interdisciplinarity is described, along with examples of benefits like increased creativity and problem-solving abilities, as well as some of the key challenges such as language barriers, misunderstandings of intent, and flawed assumptions about one another. The importance of values and attitudes, like humility, curiosity, and respect, are discussed as they are required to create an environment where collaborators feel able to fully engage in interdisciplinary work. The chapter highlights some attempts to create spaces conducive to interdisciplinarity, such as Intergroup Dialogue, before introducing the purpose of this edited volume. An overview of the book’s content is given, along with an outline for the innovative reflective methodology used within, guiding the reader on how to interact with the book.
