ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces the volume on the material culture of the Swedish Navy. It explains the unique conditions of the Baltic Sea that contribute to the exceptional preservation of shipwrecks, providing a foundation for fruitful collaboration between underwater archaeology, history, and ethnology. The chapter presents, too, the book's contributions. In addition, it offers a brief overview of Sweden's naval history between about 1500 and 1800.
