ABSTRACT

This chapter describes and analyses a methodology used to identify intentionally sunk warships in Djupasund, one of the straits off Karlskrona in southern Sweden. The authors argue that, as long as the right historical source material is available and sources of error are considered, the method offers great opportunities for linking wrecks on the seabed to historically documented warships. Besides identifying the wrecks, other valuable information concerning the ships’ life-cycles and their sinking can also be obtained. Within the Lost Navy programme, maritime archaeologists from the Swedish Maritime and Transport Museums have mapped, documented, and identified more than twenty wrecks at various locations in Sweden.
