ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on how Topeng mask makers acquire knowledge about the form, style and shape of masks across time. Prior to the advent of photography and media technologies, Topeng craftsmen ( sangging tapel ) would learn first-hand from more established carvers or through visually and materially engaging with Topeng masks kept in personal collections. Today's younger carvers can often gain inspiration for their craft through social media. The chapter concludes by demonstrating how transformations in mask carving knowledge acquisition have allowed artists in Bali to do what they have always done best: experiment with creativity while maintaining an honoured historical tradition.
