ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the music of the Topeng theatre. It explores the distinct set musical pieces accompanying various masked characters in the play. The interactive non-verbal dialogue between Topeng actors and musicians is encapsulated in the Balinese concept of saling intip, or “meticulous observation.” Saling intip underscores the collaborative effort required of both dancers and musicians to “look out” for one another on stage, thereby ensuring a smooth and harmonious performance. This interaction highlights the deep, real-time connection between Topeng dancers and the musicians.
