ABSTRACT
How can we make recent positive changes regarding diversity and inclusion in museums sustainable? I try to formulate an answer to this question by offering a close reading of my curatorial practice at the Amsterdam Museum. The program line New Narratives, which I initiated in 2017, was a catalyst for change in terms of presenting more inclusive narratives about the city, as well as becoming a more inclusive organization. I present case studies from New Narratives tours, the exhibition Black and Revolutionary (2017–2018) in collaboration with The Black Archives, and Dutch Masters Revisited (2019–2020) with Urban Myth, which sparked a public debate around the term ‘Golden Age’, to reflect on lessons learned in dealing with colonial histories and legacies.
