ABSTRACT

This short chapter reports on four technology-led border management tools deployed in border management procedures in Greece. As a starting point, by exploring the meaning of borders, securitisation, and militarisation, the article reflects on how this surveillance infrastructure has become part of a political economy, in which private stakeholders active in the fields of security are playing an essential role in shaping EU policy on technology-led border management matters. In this context, the article provides a short analysis of a recent ruling issued by the Hellenic Data Protection Authority on two of these tools, published in April 2024. Then, the article provides a brief description of the private vendors that are building this technology-led surveillance ecosystem in Greece, incorporating the use of AI algorithms and facial recognition technology to monitor and surveil people on the move.
