ABSTRACT

The vast and varied landscape of rural India presents a complex picture of livelihoods, resilience, and persistent challenges. Home to a significant majority of the nation's population, these rural spaces, as they are mostly perceived, are not monolithic; they are dynamic ecosystems shaped by diverse agro-climatic conditions, sociocultural contexts, and a historical continuum. The chapters within this volume offer a rich exploration of these multifaceted realities, taking into account the multiple strategies, interventions, and the lived experiences of individuals and communities striving for sustainable and dignified livelihoods. This introductory chapter highlights the key connecting themes that unite these explorations, setting the stage for a deeper understanding of the pathways to prosperity being forged in rural India.
