ABSTRACT

The present and future of education demand educators equipped with open artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities to transform global learning landscapes. This chapter advocates for a manifesto entitled “Catalysing Open-Source Collaboration for AI Fluency for Educators”, grounded in an analysis of the intersection between the digital divide, AI literacy, and open-source collaboration in higher education. Drawing on a conceptual review and a proposed framework for action, this initiative seeks to transform education through (a) Integration of AI fluency, intercultural collaboration, and participatory methodologies into educational practices; (b) promoting openness in education by developing open-source platforms that facilitate the co-creation and sharing of AI-based educational resources; and (c) advancing the use of technology as a transformative tool for driving social and educational innovation towards a more inclusive and sustainable future. Our interdisciplinary team brings together expertise in AI, education, and sustainability and actively engages with global networks. We firmly believe that open-source collaboration is key to empowering educators with the AI competencies needed to shape the future of education. United by this vision, we design innovative and inclusive projects that aim to transform education worldwide.
