ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the funeral ceremonies of Ukrainian soldiers killed at the front during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation (2022–2024). The source basis for the analysis was interviews conducted from December 2023 to September 2024 with the clergy celebrants of the funerals. Both the main motifs and the theological evocations used by the clergy and their references to the socio-political situation and the war itself were examined – as part of the discourse analysis. The aim of the analysis is to indicate the role and significance of the funeral ceremonies of Ukrainian soldiers killed at the front, both for their loved ones and the local communities to which they belonged and for the Ukrainian nation as a whole.
