ABSTRACT

Reflecting upon author’s extensive experience of conducting quality-based evaluations, this chapter outlines the key steps when undertaking this type of evaluation. The objective is to provide organisations and funders with both a practical guide for how to articulate their specific values, purpose, and relevant stakeholders and a methodology through which to determine whether the practices of the organisation serve its stated purpose and help it to realise its values. The methodology is noteworthy for its ability to shed light upon the changes in the values of the stakeholders that cultural organisations might be seeking to make. The chapter proposes the Quality Evaluator (QE) as a reflexive methodology to capture the complex interplay between cultural, social, and societal values that underpin practices within cultural sectors and beyond.
