ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to understand why the commons matter in urban transformations and how non-economic values contribute to the process through the common practices, such as social and cultural practices. More specifically, this study identifies important social and cultural practices that determine the qualities of landscapes and provide a mixed method through which to assess the different qualities of these practices. In so doing, this chapter puts forth an argument as to why the commons is a useful concept for systematic analyses of contemporary urban landscapes, with a South Korean urban development case. It thus can be said to contribute to extant literature on the commons and common practices.
