ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the complex dynamics of irregular migration from India to the United States of America (USA), analyzing recent trends, patterns, and policy responses. Drawing on contemporary data and policy developments, the study reveals a significant surge in unauthorized Indian migration, with notable shifts in demographic composition and transit routes. The chapter, based on secondary data sources from the United Nations (UN) and government sources, and various studies, highlights the emergence of sophisticated transnational networks facilitating irregular migration, particularly through the “donkey route” and the increasing usage of the USA–Canada border. The analysis demonstrates how economic disparities, visa restrictions, and complex push-pull factors contribute to irregular migration patterns. The chapter also explores recent policy shifts under changing US administrations and their implications for bilateral relations with India, including unprecedented enforcement measures such as military-assisted deportations. This examination contributes to the broader understanding of contemporary global migration challenges and the intricate interplay between migration governance, economic aspirations, and bilateral relations.
