ABSTRACT

The American Central Intelligence Agency covertly controlled and subsidised the ostensibly independent and commercial Forum World Features news agency as part of its propaganda strategy to get news and views backing the American position into the global press from 1966 to 1975. Forum pumped out hundreds of articles annually that appeared in scores of newspapers, especially in Asia, Africa, and Australia. But to maintain that commercial cover Forum had to engage in the often messy tactics of real news-feature agencies and ended up putting out more non-political fluff and features, which competed with and financially undercut truly independent feature agencies.
