ABSTRACT
This chapter addresses the role of academic institutions in developing capacities needed to achieve SDG 8. We review a range of capacity needs assessments focused on identifying what knowledge and skills are needed to achieve and maintain transitions to an inclusive green economy. We find that academic institutions will need to refocus their academic programmes towards developing transdisciplinary and transversal skills. Further, we discuss pedagogical implications of this shift, including the need for societal and geographical integration of academic training. We conclude by presenting a case of an educational programme, the collaborative programme in Climate Change and Sustainable Development, exemplifying curriculum development work and pedagogical approaches tailored to address capacity needs related to SDG 8.
