ABSTRACT
Hawaiian naming practices are an act to define and articulate a collective present-day relationship as a placeholder for future generations. The stories within this collection share the relationship between people and place that evokes the naming process utilized by the Papahānaumokuākea Native Hawaiian Cultural Working Group Nomenclature Subcommittee. Comprising community advocates, cultural practitioners, language experts, and researchers tied to Papahānaumokuākea National Marine Sanctuary, our goal is to push the agenda of reclaiming space through names that are consistent with a Hawaiian worldview to continuously build, strengthen, and maintain deep relationships with elements and organisms within our homeland of Hawaiʻi.
