ABSTRACT

The JoIn-DemoS project explores the mutual interplay of journalism innovations between news professionals, media organizations, and society. This chapter analyzes the main goals of these innovations in the five European countries that participated in the project. The analysis reveals dominant internal drivers of innovations in news organizations are economic support, organizational culture, collaboration, multidisciplinary teams, and technological tools. The study also depicts the obstructions to journalism innovation, such as low investment, lack of motivation, not retaining talent, and resistance to change. The chapter also examines any possible social consequences of media innovations. Finally, the chapter outlines a matrix of the factors that shape the implementation of innovation in news outlets.
