ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the key concepts and considerations related to artificial intelligence and biobanking, as presented in this co-edited volume by more than a dozen of authors. By bringing together a wealth of expertise from the social sciences, bioethics, law, and biobanking, it addresses the implications, potentials, and risks of AI in biobanking. It demonstrates how biobanks, situated at the intersection of research and healthcare, are shaped and transformed by technological advancements and legal changes. Furthermore, as biobanks can draw on their experience in adapting to new legislation, building trust, and managing expectations, this chapter presents a variety of viewpoints necessary to understand the ethical, legal, and societal implications. Ultimately, it argues that a multidisciplinary approach is essential to grasp the various aspects of AI and highlights the new tensions surrounding individual and societal values, human and research participant rights, ethical principles, and calls for improvements to established research governance practices and structures.
