ABSTRACT
In light of recent significant advances in the field of artificial intelligence, we find ourselves right on the cusp of what will doubtlessly be a major reimagining of the current landscape of biobanking. This requires assessing how issues of trust and trustworthiness can be successfully conceptualized in the framework of biobanking AI while touching upon perceived risks, lack of transparency, and poor explainability or understandability. Furthermore, a patient’s or data subject’s consent process can be both improved and democratized by tailoring the information to the individual. Trust is identified as the main driving force behind the acceptance of AI, suggesting that the development of trust models and theoretical frameworks for trust in the AI context are pivotal for risk management. This chapter suggests that future developments of Trustworthy AI implement measures that take all stakeholders into account, through, for instance, co-production. This would help with issues like trust, trustworthiness, and transparency relevant to biobanking in particular, and would ensure enough flexibility to also take national disparities and complexities into account.
