ABSTRACT

Flowing from Angola, the Loange River is an important tributary of the Kasai River. During the colonial period, the Loange was a major transport route. Today, however, the Loange is sparsely populated and heavily forested, making archaeological investigations difficult. Still, survey of approximately 35 km of the Loange yielded three sites. Excavations at each of them revealed an occupation of the area dating back to the 6th century CE. This chapter presents the stratigraphy and contexts of the excavated sites along the Loange River.
